Here are two terms that you might see in your job search: OT and SD. What do they mean? How do they impact your pay?

What Is Overtime Pay? (OT)

What it really means: Hours worked beyond 40 hours in a workweek.  

When you work over 40 hours per week in the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) rules require overtime pay to be at least time and a half of your regular hourly rate. 

For example:  

  • Regular pay: $20 per hour 
  • Overtime rate: $20 × 1.5 = $30 per hour 

So, that means your overtime pay should be no less than $30 per hour if you make $20 per hour as your base compensation. 

What Is Shift Differential Pay? (SD)

What it really means: Extra pay for working less popular shifts. 

Employers usually offer shift differential for less popular shifts during the evenings, overnight hours, weekends, or rotating schedules. You might see it listed like this:

  • $0.50 per hour for second shift 
  • $1.00 per hour for third shift (overnight) 
  • $2.00 per hour for weekends 

Federal law does not regulate shift differential — employers offer it at their discretion. However, if your employer offers it, the FLSA requires them to include it when calculating overtime pay. For example, if your base pay is $20 per hour:

So, you’re entitled to $30.75 per hour if you work overtime on the second shift. Your pay will increase if you work unusual shifts.
